Social Media can be a great tool. It can help you keep in touch with family, reconnect with old friends, make new friends, and find articles. Sometimes it can seem like there's a learning curve between people who have grown up with this technology and others who are learning it later in life. Use these tips as you navigate Facebook.
1. Safety First!
While there are tons of great people out there on Facebook, it also opens you up to scammers. One of the best ways to avoid these scammers is to check your settings. Facebook has made it easy to make yourself hidden from the public. Make sure you never give out personal information over Social Media. Don't become friends with people you don't know. This gives others access to your information. Be careful meeting up with anyone you meet over social media. Not everyone is who they say they are. Always beware of anyone requesting money from you.
2. Look for "Groups" to connect with others that have similar interests.
Do you like to hike? Collect coins? Have a favorite TV show? There are groups for just about everyone on Facebook. By joining these groups, you are able to talk with others that have the same interests. You can also use groups to share information between family, friends, civic groups, and clubs without having to share everything publicly.
3. Respect Others' Privacy
Everyone has different comfort levels with their social profiles. So, before you add that cute picture you took of your granddaughter or share a personal post a loved one put on their wall, make sure and ask permission.
4. Make use of the "Save" Feature
Facebook has enabled a feature that allows you to save posts that you are interested in and want to come back to. By clicking on the three dots on the top right of a post, you can click "save post" and come back to the post when you have more time. The saved posts can be found on the side bar of the screen.
5. Have fun!
Don't be intimidated by the new technologies. Enjoy the opportunity to stay more in touch than you ever have been able to before! If you have questions, just ask!
